Selecting a Counselor
Good thoughts about selecting a counselor.
I included this section because selecting a counselor can be more then just going where your managed care provider book or the phone book tell you. Picking someone to help you through difficulties requires a degree of trust and rapport that is usually held for only the closest people in life and sometimes not even for those people. In addition finding someone that respects and can understand Christian values and theology can be difficult. Selecting a counselor can be a daunting task for individuals, families, or couples that feel that they need outside help or who are in crisis.
I have listed some questions or considerations to have when looking for a counselor.
What is the counselor’s approach?
That is how they are going work with you on the issue that is bringing you to counseling.
How much does the counselor charge?
Is the counselor licensed?
It is not necessary to be licensed in oregon to be a counselor and many very good counselors are not; however, health insurance usually does not cover individual non-licensed practioners.
Does my health insurance have a mental health benefit, and does it cover licensed professional counselors?
What does the counselor feel about my religious views?
Do I feel that this person is listening to me, or do they have there own agenda before I even get started?
These are some good questions to ask and consider with your healthcare professional.
